Language Experience

Language Experience is a personalized reading approach in
which a student or a small group of students dictates a story to the teacher. The
student learns to read what he has said, and therefore, is the source of his own
materials.
Advantages
1. A good beginning approach for use with an individual or a group of students.
2. It teaches students that reading is what is said written down.
3. Good for a student with non-standard English.
4. Makes reading personal.
5. Of high interest uses - the students own ideas - very motivating.
6. Good for remedial reading.
7. Very helpful in building a basic sight vocabulary.
8. Good for teaching left-right direction ability.
9. Helps students to sound natural as they read; helps with phrasing.
10. Students are reading meaningful story in beginning reading.
11. Good for supplementing a basal program.
12. Students learn to share ideas when working in a small group.
13. Good for individualizing instruction.
14. Flexible.
Limitations
1. There is no scope & sequence; teachers must be aware of skills needed to be
taught and teach them on their own.
2. Requires a lot of teacher time to make the materials and plan experiences. -
for the children to dictate about.
3. Students do not read a variety of literature; must be sure they are exposed to
a variety in their recreational reading.
4. No teacher's manual to serve as a resource.
5. All L.E.A. can become dull to some students.
6. Not as helpful past the third grade reading level.
7. Vocabulary and sentences structure may be too uncontrolled.
8. Students may, not learn thinking and problem solving skills.
9. Since the vocabulary Is not control progress may not be measured on
standardized test.
10. The language may not seem orderly during the reading period.
11. Teacher must be well organized and knowledgeable of the scope and sequences of
reading skills.
